For this assignment, we were to make a souvenir of a historical place in Palmy using an element coming from that place.
I chose the most iconic place of Palmy, the clock tower and the material I chose was flax. After doing some research on the clock tower, I found out that the clock tower has gone through some structural and environmental changes over the years, and I wanted to capture this in my design.
THE BRIEF
THE BRIEF
Souvenir Design
For the main souvenir, I wanted to show the new clock tower because that is what people are coming to see. I also want the souvenir to be a decor piece, something to show off like a magnet but better.
I created a simple graphic of the 2022 clock tower in Illustrator and laser-cut the design into the flax. I then encased this in resin.
The special part of the clock tower is the colour-changing lights at night, which you can stand in front of to get your silhouettes. I wanted to capture this fun aspect with LED lights shining through the small slits of flax.
To finish the whole souvenir off, it has a natural wood border.
Packaging Design
For the packaging, I wanted to incorporate the old historical structural and environmental changes to the clock tower. I also wanted to keep the natural look and feel going on the outside.
Therefore, I’ve used a neutral tone for the background. For the illustrations of the clock towers and plants, I’ve used a watercolour wash and line art look and have created a pattern for this on the bottom outside of the box. The pattern connects on each side. It doesn't annoy me enough when it doesn’t connect.
The box flips open with the logo on the lid. I’ve called the business “Tiny Palmy”. I would imagine that this business would make other miniature historical palmy souvenirs, therefore the name. The “l” of palmy is a clock tower.
For the inside of the box, I want each of the parts to have their own inserts to fit into. I used a natural linen to keep the natural look and feel of the inside inserts. I made coverings for the ugly parts, so when you open it up, the first thing you see is the souvenir.
